Description: Black and white photographic print showing southeast perspective view of the Mouns Jones House after restoration of masonry walls and chimneys(a), and installation of replacement casement window frames and shingled roof, but prior to re-creation of bake oven in eastern bay of north [right] gable wall and before re-opening the walled-in doorway through the center of the northeastern eaves wall. (a) Restored brick [above flashing course] northern gable-end chimney, and stone chimney at SE corner. According to the minutes of the Trust's Board of Directors' meeting of August 4, 1967, Mrs. Theresa Beard reported that during the preceding few weeks, "The dirt floor was dug out to the original foundations uncovering the stone piers"{b}, Floor joists were put in and both fireplaces were repaired; the rear door [in this east eaves wall], which had been closed [as seen in this photo], was re-opened. [Wooden] casement frames were put in the windows{1})." (b) refuting the c. 1957 HABS' annotation asserting that roofing and flooring had collapsed into and filled-up a cellar under the house. Probes under the long foundation walls, which are bedded only about two feet below grade, have also confirmed the absence of a cellar. According to the Minutes of October 15, 1968, window sashes, absent on the date of this photo, "have been made for the Mouns Jones House." The minutes of May 27, 1969, reported that the "first floor has been laid, front and rear doors finished, fireplaces fixed, closet finished, and wedge pie [sic] stairs are in. Plasterers will be working there soon. At present there are only enough boards for half of the second floor. It is hoped to start on the custodian's house{2} before the second floor of the large house is completed, and a caretaker could be put there." By the meeting of September 17, 1969, the first floor was "ready for the public" and "Plastering has been done, fireplace and bake oven completed." Note that plaque from MJHPH42--1000.01.046 can be seen on south gable wall (left of photo). FOOTNOTES {1} Although ambiguous, this seems to indicate that all of the window frames in this view are replacements, but not of the original dimensions, materials, or geometry; other photographs in this archive, locating vertical jamb-lines during restoration work, and multiple disturbances of the masonry surrounds of window and doorway openings confirm this inference. {2} sic-Restoration of the "Bridge Keeper's" [now Michael Fulp] house did not commence until November, 1970. It was re-named after research disclosed that no documented "Bridge Keeper" resided there until the mid-20th century. Laurence Ward, April, 2019 |
