Digital image of a black & white photographic print showing southeast perspective view of Michael Fulp House (formerly called Bridge Keeper's House) after early 1970s restoration. Stove chimney on north gable has been removed, during or after the March, 1967 partial collapse. Invasive tree has been cut down [trunk and roots removed later]. Details include: off-axis{1} gable-end chimney and attic window [which appears to have survived 1970 partial collapse: see MFHPH33--1005.01.034]; board-and batten shutter. Note in blue pen on verso reads: "BRIDGE HOUSE EAST END [sic] BEING RESTORED" FOOTNOTE {1} The chimney was sloped ["gathered over"] to the westward from the fireplace alignment in the southeast corner. This corbelled shift in the rising chimney stack, although structurally more complex and stressed than a vertical chimney, conferred obvious benefits: (a) more heat in the attic space from the volume of masonry mass inside the building enclosure. A vertical corner chimney, which pierces the roof plane at a lower level, discharges more of its exhaust-heat above the roof (b) more efficient shedding of moisture from the lateral faces of the chimney down the roof planes [see record MFHPH31--1005.01.032, Footnote {1}. The chimney would also have been protected by flashing or "drip" courses of stone projecting from the chimney walls parallel to the roof planes.
