Masonry Restoration of Collapsed Walling |
Archive Number |

Description |
Black and white photographic print showing detail of southwest perspective view of the Mouns Jones House during restoration. Details include: masonry losses in upper eaves and gable walls; pargeted masonry; plaque on south gable wall; corner chimney detail [upper right corner]; gable end chimney detail [upper left edge]. See image #2 for note written in blue pen on verso: "Placing window frame in south [sic, i.e. west] wall. Custom made to match original{n} found in building..." This window frame, in the same vertical orientation as its predecessor shown in early 20th-century photos, was replaced within a year or two by a horizontally-aligned casement frame matching two other casements installed in this wall [see MJHPH74--1000.01.079 & MJHPH51--1000.01.055]. {n} Since this observation does not identify the "original found in building", it may be assumed that the reference was to one of the vertically aligned windows (presently interpreted as vertical hung-sash units) in the opposite eaves wall, or based on a misinterpretation of the late-19th/early 20th century hung-sash fenestration seen in other photos in this archive. It seems plausible to assume that the substitution of horizontally aligned casements for the restored fenestration pattern might have been based on the 1886 woodcut [see record #MJHDWG2]. See record #MJHPH1, footnote © regarding the evidence for leaded glass windows in the restoration plan for Mouns Jones 1716 house. Laurence Ward, November, 2018 |
