Kitchen door sill and jamb feet |

Description |
Exterior view of restored east cellar door sill and jambs. The stone sill [original] was shifted 2-3 inches to the right [north] to accommodate the adjusted jamb alignments [see DTR09PH4--1001.01.124 for discussion of the effects of this relocation of the sill on the relationship between the doorway jambs, lintel, sill, abutments and hood outlookers, and DTR09FN3--1001.01.176 for a field notes drawing of the probable historic and modern locations of those elements]. Water table inside and outside is 4 inches below top of the original sill. The inside "pool," absent a mitigation and drainage system, is more than 2 inches above the original (to be restored) kitchen floor level. The drain pipe inlet through the restored east wall drainage "tunnel" near the NE corner, set at a level calculated to drain water from the restored 18th-century floor and its brick paving, with minimal pitch to its outlet, would have drained the accumulations inside and outside the cellars in a matter of hours rather than the several days or more required for discharging the accumulation of water through natural percolation through the walls and soils. Once the creek recedes to a level below the gravity drain outlet, this discharge is rapid, dramatically reducing the duration of the exposure of the foundation mortar to saturation and prolonging its functional life expectancy exponentially. This accelerated drying-out of the foundation masonry also more efficiently dissipates the rising damp migrating through the walls, diminishing the degradation to wall integrity caused by this natural but destructive process. SEE DTR09PH82—1001.01.171 and DTR09PH85—1001.01.174 and their Descriptions for the details and location of the restored original drain. Laurence Ward, 2009 |
