Description |
Digital image of a south perspective view of a White Horse Tavern photograph reproduced by the halftone process published in Vol. III, issue No. 1, p. 37 of the "Pennsylvania-German" magazine. The text material related to this image includes: "When the old ‘White Horse Hotel’…was remodeled some years ago…tearing out closets and the thick stone walls of a large fireplace…." There is no evidence or documentation provided for the "Hotel" designation in the text or photo caption. The Historic Preservation Trust Board minutes of 12/21/70 state "Three houses were made out of the inn and nothing original remains of the interior except one door, window frame, and a foundation of a walk-in fireplace." A National Register application prepared by the Trust states that the building was converted to apartments in about 1870. Montgomery’s 1886 "History of Berks County" (p. 953) states that Douglassville "contains [in 1886]…St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church…fine residences, two stores and a hotel." A few lines later the hotel is identified as the Douglassville Hotel [at its present location several hundred yards northeast of the White Horse], and names the proprietor, Samuel Van Reed. Based on these sources, there was no White Horse Hotel on the site in 1886, and there is no evidence of the extant structure functioning as a "Hotel" at any other time. Details include: flashing course for horizontal gable cornice (pediment base), late Victorian-era porch, dressed and coursed masonry eaves wall, random-rubble masonry gable wall. Compare the view in this c. 1901-02 halftone image with a similar perspective view from 1971 depicted in WHTPH1--1007.01.003. Larry Ward, 2016 |
