Sites and Structures Report August 2015 |
Description |
HISTORIC PRESERVATION TRUST OF BERKS COUNTY SITES & STRUCTURES COMMITTEE REPORT AUG., 2015 1.WHITE HORSE TAVERN: Mat Mosca has determined that the original 18th century paint on the exterior woodwork is the same as the lead-white on the Douglass House. With Board approval, the remaining original WHT window frames and sash and all future replacement woodwork will be painted with the GDH lead-white formula. The same first-period color will be applied to non-period steps, railings, and entry-decks as maintenance requires. 2.KEIM BARN: Mike Kelly is painting all exterior woodwork with Sherwin-Williams top-grade "Rustic Red" flat latex. He will also replace missing window panes. 3.MOUNS JONES HOUSE:A. Displaced wall ranges have been dismantled down to foundation plinth, except for 4' x 7' pier between the two doorways, which was inclined several inches out-of-plumb. The pier will be re-aligned to its vertical axis if the structural integrity [mortar is disintegrated] of the masonry can be maintained during the process; otherwise it will be dismantled and re-laid with stone units returned to original locations, and jambs preserved intact as much as possible. The degraded condition of the wall structure required dismantling and re-construction of the entire project range down to the foundation plinth. B. lime- mortar will be used in test-wall and first course of wall south of original doorway. Moisture will be controlled and curing progress monitored. C. Original doorway was excavated to undisturbed clay bed with minimal moisture content; base was built up on coarse mortar and small-stone/fines crust; boulders and sill-base stones were leveled and sill-stone set at same elevation as the sill at east wall entry. D. Window glass sherds [thin early 18th century, pale green] are being collected from current on-site archaeological excavations, and examined for consistency with possible leaded type indicated by framing rabbet. 4.FLOOD INSURANCE RECOMMENDATIONS: Reduce GDH flood coverage based on relative risk and potential losses. Reducing the building limits to actual risk exposure will reduce premiums and fees by more than $1,000. per year. Laurence Ward, December 2020 |
